UMA, or unified management account, is an investment vehicle that holds multiple and diverse investment products within a single account. Holdings may consist of SMAs, mutual funds, ETFs, or single stock positions and can encompass many different asset classes.
Overlay refers to the process of orchestrating the UMA by coordinating the trading activity of all underlying investments. The SMA managers within the UMA provide the overlay manager with their model portfolios and trade orders, and the overlay manager executes those multiple trade orders in an organized, cost-effective, and tax-managed way.
